 Abstract:  Laurence Harper Norton (1888-1960) was a soldier, banker, industrialist, Ohio state legislator and Cleveland civic and cultural leader. He was also private secretary to Ambassador Myron T. Herrick and president of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of correspondence, legal documents, financial records, newspaper clippings, photographs, genealogical materials, certificates and other materials relating to various members of the Norton, Castle and Harper families, including Robert, Alexander J., and Rice Harper, and to Jay Cooke, Myron Herrick, Ohio National Guard Troop A, and the 37th Division of the 135th Field Artillery.

 Abstract:  Dudley J. Hard (1872-1950) was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and soldier. He was a member of Cleveland's Troop A, serving with the First Squadron Ohio Cavalry during the Mexican border dispute of 1916-1917, and with the 135th Field Artillery in France during World War I, commanding the unit from August 1917 to April 1919. He retired a brigadier general in 1936. His father, Curtis V. Hard, of Wooster, Ohio, served as a colonel in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Cuban campaign of 1898. The collection consists of military orders, bulletins, memoranda, rosters, payrolls, maps, war diaries, tactical procedures, discharge records, correspondence, newspaper clippings, certificates of commission, and a souvenir volume and programs. Included are records relating to the Eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the 135th Field Artillery, the 62nd Field Artillery Brigade and the 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and souvenir volumes concerning various Cleveland military units. Also included are documents relating to the military career and death of Curtis V. Hard, the Spanish-American War, and his manuscript account of the war which was published in 1988 as, Banners in the air.
